Oakland University Reaps the Ranking Rewards of SEO

Oakland University, a regional public institution in Rochester Hills, Michigan. For seven years, the university has partnered with RNL for search engine optimization (SEO). Our work for Oakland University has helped the institution produce strong search engine rankings and effective online engagement and is part of our digital lead generation for our campus partners.

During this time, RNL has constantly innovated our approach to adapt to changing algorithms, markets, and student behaviors. Over the last year, RNL completed the overhaul of more than 30 program pages to include information on related careers, in order to strategically respond to documented increases in emphasis that today’s students put on career prospects upon graduation. These efforts include content related to “What can you do with a ______ degree?” as well as the presentation of Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data on annual salary, estimated job openings, and projections of growth.

This overhaul was in addition to the ongoing work to ensure that more than 60 undergraduate and graduate pages continue to rise to the top of organic search results, and RNL has also begun work on an additional 40+ pages in additional subject areas. This ongoing optimization helps Oakland University achieve strong SEO results so that it achieves first-page search results for critical keywords and programs.

  1. Among 302 keywords that are resulting in placement on the first 10 pages of Google, more than 40 percent have appeared on the first page over the last six months.
  2. Deployed strategies have vaulted programs as diverse and competitive as teacher leadership, finance, mechanical engineering, and human resource development to the first page of search results.
  3. RNL’s work has resulted in Oakland’s Teacher Leadership program consistently ranking as the first search result under “teacher leadership degree.”
